Journalling reads: It’s hard to believe that you are already ten years old Lukas. We were determined to make your birthday special this year but somehow as usual things didn’t go to plan. You were in a grump and we were running late but we did manage to have an interesting day. We started with what was technically breakfast at Pizza Hut, you really enjoyed all the different kinds of pizza and even some salad. Logan played with a kids meal and seemed to enjoy trying Mummy’s food more than his own We Followed this with a trip to the Ashmolean Museum, where you had fun playing with all the interactive stations until Logan had a meltdown. Next up was Bowling at Bowlplex before picking up a few Chinese Takeaway boxes from Oxy Oriental and heading home for birthday cake and gifts!

Journalling reads: It has become a bit of tradition in our family, that after you have had Farleys Rusks, we have moved on to baby food. Each one of you has been different when it comes to your likes and dislikes. But for some reason unknown to me you have all loved Heinz Chocolate Pudding. It comes in a tin, looks vaguely like brown blancmange and smells faintly of plastic. It’s always a mess when you have it and it doesn’t wash out easily but you always eat the entire bowl full and then cry for more. 17th May 2012.

Journalling reads: I am slightly ashamed to admit that I have never really paid that much attention to any of the Paralympic Games before London, With so many different classifications in each event it was always a little too complicated for me. Being the home games, we made the effort to at least try and understand. We watched in amazement as these “Superhumans” won an astounding 120 medals - 34 Gold, 43 Silver and 43 Bronze. Royal Mail decided to honour them in the same way as the able bodied Olympians, by painting postboxes golden for each of the gold medallists. London 2012 has been truly amazing, bring on Rio 2016!

Journalling reads: When Lukas was born I never thought that I would be the kind of Mummy who got involved in things. I was sick all the time and even though I did try and take him to baby groups a few times I hated every second of them. I was always so terrified that other people would look at me and judge me as inadequate as a parent as I judged myself. I have never really been a confident person. I tried to take part in any school events, turning up and cheering on Sports Day and for maypole dancing, attending school fetes and buying cakes from bake sales, but I never really got involved more than that. Yet for some reason I felt compelled to attend the meeting when his school decided to form a parent and teacher association called the Friends of Church Cowley St James. I wanted to help out with activities that the kids would enjoy and remember after they had left the school. I remember coming home filled with an enthusiasm I haven’t felt in a really long time. It’s been almost a year now since the PFA was formed and while it’s been hard work I have never regretted making the effort. We have held a few fund raising events, Bag To School, Refreshments at Christmas events, The Secret Room, Daffodil Sale for Mothers Day, an Easter Disco and produced Tea Towels that featured images drawn by the children. We organised two fairly large events in the Summer Festival and an Eid Party and we have used some of the money raised to purchase some wooden play benches for the playground. It’s amazing what a very small group of dedicated people have managed to achieve after a lot of hard work and I am proud to be a small part of it.

Journalling reads: When we were living with Nannie Freda and Grampy Andy, we didn’t have many chances to really use the kitchen. Nannie Freda didn’t really like it when we cooked, she always complained about the mess even though we cleaned up afterwards. Mostly I think it was just that she considered it HER kitchen and felt that we were intruding by being in it. You have always been a bit of a picky eater, but Nannie tried to insist we make you eat the things that she cooked. As much as I hate to say it she was not really a very good cook. One of the worst things was her mashed potato which always ended up kind of grey. Whenever her and Grampy were out we took full advantage of the kitchen to cook with you. I don’t really enjoy cooking, but it seemed important to try and include you in doing it. Usually we tried to make simple things like fairy cakes and scones. But when Nannie and Grampy went on holiday for the weekend we had a great time cooking meals and letting you help. We found that one of your favourite tasks was mashing the potatoes. We gave you the masher and the saucepan and sat you at Nannie’s coffee table. You seemed to really like it but your favourite part was adding enough butter to turn it all bright yellow. 28/06/08.

Journalling reads: You have been so excited about your first day at nursery, you have been asking every day during in the holidays “I go school today?” The day finally arrived and your excitement turned to fear, you completely freaked out on the walk to school. It took seeing Lukas out to play to calm you down. It was so sweet to see you wiping your tears away and saying “Goggy not crying, I not crying”. We only had time for a couple of quick photos before your teacher arrived to unlock the gate. You held on really tight to my hand as we walked around to your classroom You are such a big brave boy Logan , you make me so proud. 5th September 2012

Journalling reads: Doesn’t she look peaceful, all wrapped up and snug in her snowsuit. you wouldn’t have any clue that just 5 or so minutes before this photograph was taken she was screaming the house down. We have never been very religious, so when I told Mark I was planning on taking the 3 kids to church on Christmas Eve, he was more than a little surprised. Every year the church near Lukas’s school holds an interactive nativity where all the kids can take part. For some reason I can’t remember now it seemed really important to take them for Leia’s first Christmas. I have a feeling I may have said it was a new Christmas tradition for a new baby. But I also wouldn’t rule out the possibility that it seemed like a good excuse to get her all dressed up and show her off to people. What I didn’t bank on was Mark having to work on Christmas Eve and being left to do it all by myself. Getting 3 kids dressed, out the door and walking to the church before the service started would have been hard enough for me, I am disorganised and pretty much always run late at the best of times. But Leia decided to have a complete meltdown. She wasn’t hungry, didn’t need a nappy change and nothing I tried helped, She eventually screamed herself to sleep. I can see now why we have never attempted a trip to church before or since! 24th December 2011.

Journalling reads: For your first Christmas we bought you lots of things that said Baby’s First Christmas on it. I can’t really remember all of the things we bought but I know there was a little santa hat, a couple of ornaments, a picture frame and at least 2 stockings and this first christmas cracker. I wasn’t really sure what was inside it but it was cute and cheap so I didn’t bother to resist. It was really funny that it was almost bigger than you were. The boys were eager to pull it and see what was inside, they were a bit disappointed when all that was inside was a really ugly little brown teddy bear in a dress.

Journalling reads: One of your favourite things to do in the autumn is collect conkers. It’s usually not that hard to find some at the local parks but the best place to find them seems to be school. For some reason unknown to me, both of you take great delight in filling your pockets with conkers. Big ones, small ones, dull ones, shiny ones it doesn’t seem to matter. It’s kind of sweet to watch you compete over who can be first to collect them all or who can collect the most. You never seem to have any desire to do anything with them once you have them. They just get hoarded all around the house and you fight over which ones belong to each of you. They litter the house long after the leaves have all fallen before eventually I find the shrivelled remains and through them away. I read somewhere that conkers are supposed to keep spiders away, and although it sounds strange you can buy a spray made from conkers for this and we don’t ever seem to see any in the house when you have conkers laying around. Journalling reads: After an argument with Daddy, I felt the need to escape for a while. I grabbed you and the pushchair and just left. I had no idea where I was going to go, no money and no supplies for you. We ended up in a little park. Since you had no shoes on you couldn’t get out and play, so I let you stand up in the pushchair seat to play with the toys on the play equipment. You really seemed to love playing with this abacus, you kept spinning and shoving the balls around. Sitting beside you and watching while you played gave me a lot of time to think about things and cry a lot of tears. But it wasn’t very long before I felt calm enough to dry my tears, and decide that it was time for us to go home again. There really is something incredibly soothing about watching a child at play. Everything seems so complicated to them at first but they just keep trying until it works. I guess at times we need to act like a child to remind us how to act like an adult. 22nd June 2010
