Journalling reads: Lukas loves it when he gets to make cakes and then cover them in rainbow sprinkles. The last time that we did this you were watching with interest from your baby walker. I thought you might like like to join in, so I poured some into a little container and put them on your tray. You had no interest in decorating the cakes but you really enjoyed making a mess and licking them off your fingers!

Journalling reads: Our first Easter in our own house did not really go to plan. We held a little Easter egg hunt in the garden but didn’t get any photos as the camera wasn’t charged. All of the baking we had planned never ended up getting done and the decorations never got put up. But the boys did have fun making the Easter masks from the egg hunt kit, even if they didn’t want to colour them in! Silly boys! 24th April 2011

Journalling reads: On Easter Monday we were finally able to have your egg hunt, we had to hold it inside the house thanks to the weather. You had a great time collecting the cardboard egg markers. It was very difficult to get any decent photos as you were racing around so quickly. You had found all the eggs in no time at all, and you begged to do it all again. So I sent you upstairs while I hid them and you spent the entire time shouting down to me "are you ready yet?". We ended up doing the whole process 3 times. It was so cute to see the look of excitement on your face, as you came across the eggs hiding places and to watch as you missed really obvious ones, because of how fast you were running. I think the funniest thing about it all was that you had no interest at all in eating the eggs you had collected, only in looking for them! 24th March 2008.

Journalling reads: When Leo finally came home from hospital, one of the first things I was looking forward to doing was finally being able to give him a bath. While in the hospital all that he had been allowed was a daily top and tail with cotton wool and water, I wasn’t even allowed to use baby bath (but I can’t really say that I let their rules stop me). I was excited to see if he was going to be a water baby like Lukas had been. Only we ran into a slight problem, he was so tiny I was scared of trying to bath him in the big bath. He was too tiny for any kind of seat or harness so I decided that the best thing to do would be to use a round washing up bowl. We all underestimated how much he would hate it. I don’t think I have ever heard such a bloodcurdling scream in my life, he flung his tiny arms and legs about and it was a battle to keep him in contained in the bowl. It was kind of amazing to see that the flannel covered his whole body like a towel. We tried to take some photos but only managed a few blurry and out of focus ones. There was a video but it got lost in a computer crash. Amazingly his tears stopped the second that we removed him from the washing up bowl and wrapped him up in his big fluffy white bath towel for a cuddle with mummy 26th September 2004.

Logan seemed to be a little bit scared to let go of Daddy’s hands and go down the slide, but he was more willing once he saw Lukas at the bottom to catch him. I love watching the three of you playing together, it’s too cute for words!

Journalling reads: When Lukas was younger, we took him to see Bobby Roberts Super Circus. We had never been to a circus before and we were excited at least until they said no photographs were allowed. It’s kind of dificult to capture the memory of a first trip to the circus, without photographs. During the intermission they offered the chance to ride the ponies or have a photograph taken with their elephant, Anne. We let Lukas pick which he wanted to do and he chose the ponies, but for days afterwards we all remarked about how very sad she had looked. She has been a part of the circus since she was a baby. Since then a lot of things have changed, a tabloid newspaper filmed her groom, “battering, kicking and stabbing her with a pitchfork. The RSPCA stepped in and she has now been rehomed to Longleat Safari Park. She is receiving all the care and attention that she requires for her severe arthritis and dry skin. It makes me happy to know that at 57 years old, she is now finally allowed to relax and just live out her life in peace. April 2011.

Journalling reads: January 2010 saw the coldest temperatures and most snow fall in 30 years in the UK. Thanks to school closures because of the weather and you being sick, this was the only day that you actually went to school in 2 weeks. You only managed to go outside twice to play in it, The first was in the garden and Daddy forgot to take photos. The second was on the way home from the one day you went to school. You had a great time playing in the snow with Daddy. You made snowballs and a mini snowman. You threw snow at Daddy. You dragged your arm across the park fence and ended up with a soaking wet sleeve and gloves and you ate lots of snow (gross!). While the snow may look pretty and be fun to play in we were all kind of glad when it finally melted. It was nice to get back to normal and not have to wear layers of clothes just to stay warm inside the house!

Journalling reads: After a silly lady on the reception desk, a very rude nurse and the sonographer leaving us sitting for ages waiting, it was finally time. The doctors had a lot of fears about you, they were worried that all the bleeding and pain might mean that you were not where you were supposed to be. We were scared that you might be another one of our angel babies. But in less than a minute we had all the answers that we needed. You were exactly where you were supposed to be and you had a healthy strong heartbeat. It was such a relief to know that at least for now, you were ok, we could relax for a little while before there were other things for us to worry about. Once we had that reassurance it was ok to see the funny side to all the little details about the appointment, like the fact that they finally had an alternative to tying a blue nitrile glove around the probe since the covers are made of latex and mummy is highly allergic, they were now using latex free condoms. Or the fact that the poor doctor looked so grateful and relieved that my pregnancy would be handled by the Silver Star Team and he didn’t have to read through my long and complicated maternity notes. Or maybe that in a whole row full of sample toilets, mummy managed to pick the only one without a working lock and someone walked in while I was trying to accomplish the very difficult task, of peeing in the little bottle without getting covered. After our visit was over we were left with readjusted dates based on size, your new due date is August 27th. But I have a feeling if you are anything like your brothers, a due date won’t matter one tiny bit to to you, and you will arrive when and where you decide that you want to, just please don’t choose Tescos! 16th January 2009

Journalling reads: You have no idea how much I wish I could look at these photographs and just sit and write about how sweet it is that you and Joshua were playing together in the garden with the quad bike. But I can’t because every single time I look at these photos they make me feel sad. With Joshua being born so soon after Leo died I couldn’t really help myself from using him to try and fill the huge void in my heart. He stayed with us a lot and I kind of ended up treating him like he was one of my own. It made things easier for you, having someone around to play with to take your mind off everything. The two of you formed a really great relationship with each other but I can’t seem to help my thoughts from wondering to wishing. I wish that Leo had been able to join you, for the three of you to bond and play as cousins, but more than anything else i wish that you had been given the chance to make at least some of these memories as brothers.

Journalling reads: It all started when I was looking through my make-up bag to see what I had for the wedding we were going to. Logan was fascinated by the single bottle of nail varnish that I had in there. He kept bringing me the bottle since he couldn’t understand what it was. I decided the only way to satisfy him was to show him what it was for. So I opened the bottle, lifted him on to my lap and I painted his big toe for him. He was thrilled and got all excited. He insisted on showing everyone. In our house it’s pretty much always a case of monkey see, monkey do. So Lukas decided that even though he hates pink with a passion, if Logan has one nail painted than he wanted one painting too. They seemed content with their single painted nail, or at least Lukas was. Logan was only pacified with that until he saw me painting my nails in an effort to hide the big ugly bruise on one of my toes. Then he decided that one nail was no longer enough. He demanded that I paint all of his nails just like mine. I decided that it just wasn’t worth that argument, I mean really so what if he wanted his nails painted, if he was a girl nobody would have said a word about it. So even though Mark didn’t like the idea, I did it anyway. Logan was really pleased when it was done, he kept looking at them and saying “pwetty, pwetty” “pwetty piggies” “pwetty pink piggies” it made him happy and that’s the only thing I really care about anyway.

Journalling reads: To be honest with you, sports days are never very interesting. There is a lot of standing or sitting around doing nothing and a lot of waiting. But nothing is ever boring when you are around. When you were supposed to be sitting quietly with your class, you were busy wriggling, giggling and doing other things you probably weren’t supposed to be doing. When you were waiting in line for your turn at the events, you were waving and pulling silly faces at us. All of your friends thought you were so funny. The only time you even looked slightly nervous was when it was your turn for the event, and it was for a tiny split second. It never bothers you that you are not exactly gifted at sports and you always come last, but you really enjoy taking part and show really good sportsmanship. Everyone in the crowd can hear me when I am cheering you on but I don’t care I am proud that you are mine and I love you Lukas.

Journalling reads: When Nana fell and broke her arm she had lots of hospital appointments, most of them were while you were at school, so I just went with Nana. But on this occasion we had an afternoon appointment so you had to come with us. We had a really long wait but you were a really good boy, you sat nicely and played with all of the toys in the waiting room. Your favourite toy seemed to be a big Transformers monster truck. I did take some photographs of you, but they didn’t turn out great, thanks in part to the really bad lighting, and they were really blurry because you just don’t sit still. Eventually we were done and it was time to leave, Nana wanted to do some shopping and after that the best place to call and wait for a taxi is in the reception for the Children’s hospital. You were fascinated by this new wooden dragon ride. It’s a little bit like a rocking horse, there is a seat and straps for your feet, you sit on it and then it swings backwards and forwards. It was not very easy to get you up on to it, since the seat is quite high and you are a really big boy. With a combination of pushing, pulling and lifting I managed to get you up in to the seat. Then you decided that you were scared and wanted to get straight down. I asked if you would mind me taking one photograph before you did, you reluctantly agreed. In the time it took me to change the setting on the camera, you had changed your mind and started to enjoy yourself. So I guess how you train a dragon is in three steps. 1. Climb up on to it’s back. 2. Be brave and hold on tight. 3. Sit back and enjoy the ride. This was much more fun than just waiting for a taxi!

I actually remember that when I took this photo I was trying to get a photograph of your first tooth while you were stood in the travel cot. Every time I focused the camera you would start jumping up or sitting down or even worse closing your mouth and shaking your head. Somehow even though your mouth is wide open in this shot we still couldn’t manage to capture that tooth! 1st June 2010.

He had no trouble at all in working out how to rip the foil covering off to get to the chocolate inside. What surprised me most is that he not only got his egg out of the box and out of the wrapper by himself, but he managed to do both and eat half the egg before Lukas opened up the cardboard box on his that’s quite a talent!

Poor Logan was simply overwhelmed by the constant kissing and cuddles from his big brother. Unfortunately Lukas just could not seem to be able to help himself from constantly wanting to touch his baby brother, no matter how much trouble it got him in. Black Journalling reads: Sometimes I do crazy things that even astound me with the level of stupidity. Like when we decided to take the boys to a fireworks display at South Park and thought it would be a good idea to take Logan in the sling. I even remember standing there and saying, “I carry him around all day long how can a sling be much different.” Of course what i didn’t account for was the distance we had to walk, the sheer amount of people and the fact that most of them were ignorant students who didn’t look where they were going or the fact that the display started at least 30 minutes late.. By the time that it started I was hurting and we were cold and fed up. That’s when Logan decided that he was done with the sling, hated the dark oh yeah and fireworks that made loud bangs sucked. As you can guess we were kind of glad when it was over at least until we ended up waiting over an hour for a bus home!

Credits: Layered template (Shabby Spring Templates, Template 2) and Shabby Spring both by Jen C Designs. Font is DJB Play Misty For Me by Darcy Baldwin.
Journalling reads: Holding Ernie for the first time was such a strange experience. I had been waiting so long to meet him for the first time, but between sickness, Christmas and other things he was nearly 3 months old before I finally got to give him cuddles. He was so sweet and gorgeous, and he seemed to be really content to be with me. I know it’s mean but I was thrilled that he cried when Mark held him but settled when I took him back. I even got a cute little smile from him. The boys fussed over him and I was really surprised that Logan was very sweet and gentle I thought that he would be very jealous and possesive like he is when Lukas or Mark tried to cuddle me. The strange part is that for years holding a baby has turned me to complete and utter mush. As we walked out of their Mark looked incredibly nervous. He was expecting the usual conversation that involved me gushing about the baby, and dropping in a few not so subtle hints about how nice it would be to have another baby. Only it didn’t come, I loved holding him but it was enough for me to cuddle him and then give him back to his mummy. I didn’t even want to take him home with me. It felt so wrong to me since I have spent almost my whole adult life with the longing for a baby. I guess that I may have just finally reached the point of being done with having kids. 23/01/2011

Journalling reads: When you are travelling on a train with two kids, sometimes a 30 minute journey can feel more like a 30 hour trip. It’s a mummy’s job to get a little creative when it comes to ways of stopping the endless questions of “are we there yet?”, “how much longer?” and “where are we now?” or try to avoid the inevitable “Mummy, I’m boooooorrrrreeeedddd”. I am lucky that my two are used to travelling and are fairly well behaved, but on this trip home from London, Lukas was tired and Logan was fed up of Lukas being in his face. So we played a game where we dressed Logan in a Santa hat we had bought as part of a bib and hat combo (which ended up being a little small) and handed Lukas the phone to take pictures. They both seemed to enjoy it or at least Logan preferred this to Lukas’s previous methods of annoying him. He kind of looks like a tiny little grumpy elf,so does that make him, a mummy’s little helper?

Journalling at the top reads: I used to drive Mark insane whenever we took Lukas to feed the ducks, I would stop every time I saw a pretty flower and take photos. He could never understand what the purpose was of any of these photos. I could never find the words to explain to him that I simply appreciated the beauty of them and I felt compelled to capture all that beauty forever in a photograph., it just made me happy to be able to see it whenever I wanted to. Cutteslowe Park, 1st July 2006.
Verse in the centre reads: Many times I wander, Afraid of things to come Seeing things that aren't really love; Like the things that I have done. Then I see a single flower, Simple bright and alive, And if it grows for a reason; Then maybe so do I. What gives life to the flower, What makes each petal bloom and grow. Is it God that gives the power, For me to really want to know. How I wish I was a flower, Living in life, the life he gave for free Maybe I one of His flower, Because I care the same for me, poem written by Levitha Flowers.

Journalling reads: When we first met you were a Cub Scout leader in Kidlington, Paul had got you into it. Since my Mum and Step dad used to be Beaver leaders and my brothers were both Cubs I thought it was kind of fun. You took me with you to one of the meetings, we had a BBQ and played with some water. I admit I didn’t like it very much, the fact that I hated Paul probably didn’t help. But mostly my problem was that I couldn’t understand why you asked me to come with you and then ignored me all the time. You wouldn’t let me help with anything. Eventually your Cub Troop ended up being disbanded since there were multiple groups in that section. You decided to help out at the local group, the 35th, ironically the same one my mum and Step dad had led in. I was kind of hormonal and clingy and I hated that you left me every week to do this. You ended up resigning, and for that I still have twinges of guilt, I know it was something you enjoyed and I'm sorry.

Trying The Microscope

Journalling reads: When we took you to the museums after the fair you were in a bit of a bad mood, actually more like a major grump. You were very annoyed that I wouldn’t take you back to the fair to go on more rides. You didn’t want to listen when I said that I couldn’t afford to pay for rides that only lasted a minute or two. When I tried to take your photo you folded your arms, scowled at me and refused to smile. You didn’t want to look at any of the dinosaur skeletons and fossils. You even refused to be impressed by the glowing rocks. I knew you liked these museums because we have been there before. But we did manage to salvage the trip once you found the microscope. You had a great time zooming in on all the mineral samples and seeing them appear on the computer monitor, you said that it was super cool.

Journalling reads: Everyday single day you learn new tricks, some of them are really very cute and some, not so much. This one for example is far from cute and very close to being extremely irritating. You have decided that it is great fun to take off all of your clothes. Since our house is freezing I always worry about whether or not you are warm enough when I layer up your clothes so can you imagine how I feel when you end up naked? As if that wasn’t bad enough you are stretching all of the necks on your clothes and wrecking them. It’s frustrating. Have you really got nothing better to do than spend your day driving me crazy? Do you really like hearing me say the same words over and over again, “Logan, please stop doing that”, “Put your arm back in that sleeve”, “Logan Angeleo Jaedyn Ben, will you please put your clothes back on” “Logan, I mean it, stop, now”, “Logan this is your last chance, get your clothes back on”, “urgh stop getting naked” and “Logan you bad boy, stop that”, there are various other combinations some spoken, some growled, some even shouted. I threaten to smack you and you ignore me. I try putting you in time out or giving you the mummy death stare, but the only thing that seems to work is this one 3 word phrase I keep in reserve for when nothing else has worked and all of my patience has run out, the one that is usually spoken in tones that make me ashamed to be a mummy, what can I say sweetie I am only human and you have a unique talent for pushing my buttons. I am not proud of it and I really wish that you wouldn’t make me resort to saying the one phrase that makes you cry every single time without fail. . . . . . . . . LEAVE IT ON!!

Journalling reads: This is a letter that we received from your school after a 15 year old boy called Jake Spicer died. Before you were born I used to work with his Mummy. “Most of you will have heard the sad news of the death of Jake Spicer one of the bravest children I have ever met. When he was being treated for cancer he still came into school even after terrible chemotherapy treatments he even took part in the Christmas production. We feel honoured to have known such an inspirational and courageous human being. Our thoughts are with his friends and family. Jake’s family have asked everyone going to the funeral to wear pink. Not all our school can go to church of course but in his honour we are asking that every child and member of staff wears something pink to school. We are also collecting money to be given to the charity that Jake himself raised over £15000 for one to help others of course! If you would like to make a contribution, please send it into school in an envelope marked Jake.” Now here’s what Mummy posted on her blog afterwards “there is nothing Lukas hates more than the colour pink. I even bought him a pink T-shirt that I used to threaten to make him wear whenever he was naughty because I knew it was guaranteed to make him behave every single time. On our last trip to Chessington they had a T-shirt for his favourite ride, Bubbleworks on sale. I thought that since it was Bubbleworks he would overcome his hatred of the fact that it was bright pink. The morning he went to school he had the biggest meltdown I have ever seen. It started over the pink top because he didn’t want to wear it, he moved on to hysterical crying because he was scared that he was going to die too, he’s always been a little bit strange when it comes to people dying, it’s not really all that surprising after what happened with Leo that death would freak him out a little bit. But this wasn’t even anything I had ever seen from him before. Mark ended up having to drag him to school kicking, screaming and crying. It broke my heart to make him go there was a huge part of me who was tempted to just say let him stay home today but I knew that I couldn’t do that. I went with Mark to pick him up because I was worried about how he had been all day, he couldn’t stop talking about how the whole school had been outside in the playground to see the funeral procession go past. He was full of questions and a little confused by it all. He’s never seen a real coffin before, Leo’s was a teeny little white box and when he went to Yvonne’s funeral the coffin was under a covering, and at Lorraine and Mark’s Mum’s funerals everything was slightly different because they were being cremated. I also think since the school was talking about it he thought it was going to be a small coffin I don’t think he realised that Jake was 15. When we got home we thought he would be eager to take the pink T-shirt off but he surprised us by point blank refusing, I’m not entirely sure I understand his change of heart on it. I assume it’s because he saw everyone else at school wearing pink and wanted to be the same.” I can’t begin to tell you how proud I am that even though it was something you really want to do or enjoy doing, you did it anyway because it was important. 16th July 2009.

Journalling reads: Being sick all the time makes it really easy to see the negative things in my life. But I have started to realise that most of the things I view as negative are the things that I can’t do anything about, like the medical issues and the money troubles. They are things we have just have to learn to live with, sure we can have hope that they will eventually change but right now we have no way of forcing them to change. So I decided to start concentrating on the things that I could influence and change and I realised that the first and most important thing I needed to change was my own attitude about life. I thought making a list of all the good things I have in my life was a great place to start. It was a hard lesson to learn that I could have easily listed 10 things that I hated or were negative about my life but yet I struggled to find 10 things I loved or were good about it. It’s going to be a long road, but here’s to making my very first step.
Top Ten List reads: My two amazing little boys, a wonderful loving husband, a lovely great grandmother, a great online best friend, a rented 3 bedroom house, 5 amazing creative teams, super fast internet access, photoshop creative suite 5, lots of comfortable clothes and a desktop and a laptop.

Journalling reads: I know that I have never been mother of the year material. Being sick has always made things difficult for me to be the kind of mummy that I think you deserve. But you have never seemed to mind, always been happy enough with the way things are. I think that may have something to do with the fact that although Mummy is not always able to do the things she wants to do with you, she is well put bluntly a little bit crazy. Your mummy does things that most people would never dream of. Take this photo for example, Nannie Freda’s back garden was flooded thanks to the heavy rain, and it was pouring down outside. But Mummy had the smart idea to let you go outside and play in it. I took the attitude that you had wellington boots, and a really great waterproof set. A little bit of rain wasn’t going to hurt you we could always dry you off. I may sound more slightly more unconventional than crazy, did I forget to say that I decided to come out with you? I put on a pair of shoes and joined you in the garden. We jumped in the massive puddle that the concrete had become, we splashed and we made lots of noise. I made Daddy take some photos and when we were done I was soaked up to the waistband of my trousers, but it was worth it because we had so much fun!

Journalling reads: One of the first things we saw on our trip to the Natural History Museum was this awesome looking escalator. Described as “A giant metallic globe presides over Visions of Earth. Visitors can ride up through it to the upper galleries. Surrounding it the towering walls, adorned with a celestial map , put our planet in its heavenly context” You really wanted me to ride it with you, even though Daddy really wanted to ride it too, he let me go with you while he took Logan and the pushchair up in the lift. You were so excited but also nervous since like mummy you don’t really like heights. The view was amazing, but we were both glad to get off at the top after what seemed like a really long time. It was great timing as we got to the top just as Daddy and Logan stepped out of the lift. We were all eager to start looking at all of the exhibitions.
